Currently retired living in Ohio and looking into three states, only two now. I have visited and prefer FL west coast. Not a big beach person so that is not a priority. As far as Tallahassee is concerned my only thoughts are crime rate. All cities, towns, villages, hamlets have to deal with it but are there zip codes in the area where crime is not as prevalent? Schools, commutes no longer important and want to avoid 55+ communities. Any direction most appreciated. I would like to plan an extended stay somewhere in the vicinity in the near future. TIA.

The further north you go in the city, crime is not a serious concern.

Tallahassee is neither west coast Florida or even really Florida. It is south Georgia and Alabama. I moved from there awhile ago, don't miss it at all, and will never go back. It's a corrupt little college town with miserable weather and people and a higher crime rate than bigger cities in Florida, not including all the former mayors. It's a bizarre mix of Doc Hollywood, which was filmed nearby, and My cousin Vinnie.

As I'm considering a move to either Tallahassee or Colorado Springs, it would be helpful if you were a little more specific. I'm in SW Florida and I can't imagine the weather in Tally is worse than where I am. I understand the higher crime rate but as in all cities, it is usually centered in certain areas. So what specifically do you hate about Tallahassee?

Also can someone tell me about the cities in the Tallahassee area. Specifically, Monticello and Midway. Are they nice places to live?

Monticello is an actual small town and a county seat with a nice historic core.

Midway is just a rural area "midway" between Tallahassee and Quincy that has seen suburban-style growth and development in recent years.

Whether they are "nice places to live" is greatly dependent on what you're looking for in your day to day life.

Are you okay with the nearest Walmart being 20+ minutes away? Are you okay with going to the local grocery store, gas station, or fast food restaurant and find that you're one of the only white people there?

Do you want to live in a cookie-cutter subdivision on windy roads with one major road that you have to take to get anywhere, or would you prefer an older home in a neighborhood with gridded streets?

Are you okay with the nearest Walmart being 20+ minutes away? I rarely go to Wal-Mart, I'm a Publix gal.

Older home with gridded streets.
