Hello all. I think I posted already in the general forum, I missed the St. Louis area specific one :-)

I am in the process of moving to St. Louis, specifically the Ballwin area. I have zero idea what my utility bills will look like. I have not purchased a house but looking at 2000sq ft with finished basement, 4/2.5 and central AC. Any insight what I might expect or how I might be able to get an average estimate?

Hi, Mini. I'm in Ballwin with 4br and 2.5 baths, full finished basement. We're at about 1700 sq. ft., but in MO they don't count basements so technically it's double that as yours will be.

You should be able to get a past 12 months report from the gas and electric company's. Electric is AmerenUE. Gas is Spire. I believe they just need the address because I got that info from the house we bought before this one. It's helpful to know and I think based on that you can sign up for budget billing so every month is the same. Of course, if the previous owners had heat at 80 degrees and AC at 65, you'd be paying for that for a year using their bills.

For any house it depends on the weather, of course, because that can make a difference in how often you have to have your heat or AC running. For us, in the winter electric goes way down - somewhere between $50 and $70 a month. In summer, I've seen between $150 and $190.

Gas, in summer is the opposite - between $30 and $50. Winter is between $150 and $225. Gas here has gone up quite a bit though. We just had one small hike and there's another one coming so who's to say what the rest of the winter will be.

Water runs us about $30 a month. Sewer around $50. Trash about $25.

Good luck on your hunt!

I agree with Mtdreamer. Electric will likely be less than 100 in winter assuming you have gas heat and gas water heater. Electric can vary widely in summer depending on how cool you keep your house and what kind of shade you have etc. We do 76-78F on summer days and 70 at night in similar sized house . Summer can get $200-250 per month.
Gas bill in winter is about 100-200 per month. Then less than 50 in summer.

Congrats on the Ballwin purchase. Beautiful area.
