I might be accepting a job in STL and be moving from Boston. Central West End and the Loft District appear to be up my alley for what I'd be looking for. Are there major differences between the areas? I like to be around restaurants/bars but I'm not a nightlife guy. I love loft living but I'm open to more upscale living as well. Just looking for a place with a grocery store, gym, restaurants within walking distance and a safe area.

I would do CWE right now. It’s by far the most complete urban neighborhood in STL. 2 full fledged grocery stores (at least…Whole Foods and Straubs). Restaurants, shops, bars. Safer than downtown right now. Plus, the easy access to Forest Park can’t really be beat.

I've lived in Downtown and Central West End. CWE is more upscale. Both have a long list of amenities. I would choose CWE. DT has had a lot of crime over the past year but as you can imagine, they have to get that under control.

I would CWE has the edge over downtown right now - but there is a lot happening in Downtown West right now.

You might also consider -

The Hill - Southside Italian Neighborhood - Culturally well preserved - new development starting to takeoff

Tower Grove South - Heart of the southside - Residential adjacent to the S Grand business district

Dogtown - Western edge of the city - quiet - Close to Forest Park -

Lafayette Square - close to downtown - classic old time St. Louis

Great neighborhoods with amenities that are not party night life centers like Soulard and The Grove

There is also Clayton - a suburban - "urban center" - adjacent to the city - pretty quiet - walkable - higher end prices

Based on your criteria, I think CWE would be a good fit for you. Forest Park in the CWE is great. It’s 1300 acres with lots of attractions, events and things going on in there. Lots of tree lined streets, restaurants, walkability, etc…
