OoOoh- yes, I’m on my phone. Thanks for that and thank you posting these updates.

After delaying the announcement of county alignments back whenever that was it’s pleasant to see they’ve released something early. Speaking of, not adding Orangeburg to Columbias MSA will surely cost them a spot to Charles Towne in the next few years (if not one year).

It’s unbelievable that Spartanburg added more people than the entirety of Columbias MSA- my oh my.

Horry County will be most likely be the second largest county in the state by 2026-2027 and without a doubt by the 2030 census if those numbers keep up. Those numbers are insane. Lancaster is definitely getting Charlotte spill over. Indian Land is developing rapidly.

To put it in perspective for county growth, the United States grew at a rate of 1.0% in the last 3 years. I included a county map of growth and bolded the top four counties with the highest percentage.

Wow- the rest of the U.S. are slow pokes compared to that list. I feel like every time I visit home, even Cola for that matter, things will be noticeably different with this kind of growth. Visiting my aunt in Charleston in April so I probably won’t recognize anything from when I visited in 2022 lol

Woodlands, same. Florence, from what I’ve heard and seen in the past looks like a growing small city to me. The numbers don’t match what we see.

As always, I care about county growth only as part of an MSA. Horry County and the Myrtle Beach-North Myrtle Beach MSA took a little breather in numeric gain from 7/1/2022 to 7/1/2023 compared to previous years.

They released the new alignments. The Sumter MSA is now included in Columbia's CSA.

A difference of less than 500 for an annual estimate isn't a major deal and after adjustments, it might not even be accurate. But we can certainly see that Spartanburg's growth has definitely kicked into a higher gear.

I think we should keep in mind that plenty of midsized Southern metros (and some a bit larger) added less than 10K from '22-'23, to include Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Asheville, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, Macon, Tallahassee, Mobile, Birmingham, Baton Rouge, Jackson, Little Rock, Chattanooga, Virginia Beach, Memphis, and Louisville. Only in SC is Columbia seen as a laggard and it gets more praise from outsiders than SC residents.

2022-2023 CSA data for South Carolina

Greenville - 1,590,636 (+29,171)
Columbia - 1,084,112 (+11,073)
Charleston (No CSA) - 849,417 (+18,888)

If anything Greenville/Spartanburg growth is Charleston and Columbia’s CSA/MSA combined. SC is doing pretty well across the board.

I agree with Mutiny, Columbia’s growth is very healthy when you look at other CSAs and MSAs across the country! Definitely wouldn’t underestimate the growth when you look an across the nation.

It’s growling faster than a ton of MSAs over 1,000,000 including New York City, Albuquerque, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Buffalo, Chicago, Dayton, Detroit, El Paso, Fresno, Grand Rapids, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Louisville, Memphis, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, Richmond, Saint Louis, Rochester, San Francisco, San Diego, and Virginia Beach. (A lot of these lost thousands or barely grew. None over 11,000 of growth if they did grow.

If anything, it’s probably the most well set up for the future with the sustainable growth with infrastructure they are preparing for with Carolina Crossroads, etc and anything can change with Scout Motors opening in 2026 with 4,000+ jobs.

Probably why Sumter was added to the Columbia CSA. Columbia is growing pretty fast down 378 toward Sumter County
