We (spouse & 2 kids) are researching smaller cities in the Midwest to establish roots and SF keeps coming up as a place we would be interested in. However I've see the issue reported of an unpleasant smell attributed to SF especially in the summer. Some have attributed the smell to feed lots or other agricultural processing that I am sure are prevalent in and around town. Other Midwest towns we've looked at don't seem to mention these odors as frequently.
Does SF have geographical features that may trap these smells that should be avoided?

Sincere inquiry. Thank You!
Do you live next to the Smithfield plant? Largest pork processor in the world at one point in time? It's a lot better now than when I was a kid, but it's still not a perfume factory.

Wherever you received that information is hyping up a lie. There aren't any feed lots of any size close enough to Sioux Falls to create any kind of odor. The Smithfield Packing Plant on RARE occasions can produce a smell, but it isn't that bad. Yes, DECADES ago that plant, combined with the stockyards, would sometimes blanket the city with a very distinctive aroma. That problem has been pretty much eradicated and the stockyards don't exist anymore.

Makes sense. And it was decades ago and I didn't think about the stockyards getting pulled out. I recall nothing else that would have given rise to a smell though.

I was just downtown in Falls Park yesterday on a hot day and I didn't smell anything. Smithfield is right there by the park. I've never really noticed anything inside the city in general. But if you are out driving on the county roads, I have smelled some pretty potent odors due to the feedlots etc that can be found out there. That is to be expected if a person chose to live out there.
