I received a verbal (not written) job offer for a controls technician in Shreveport. The company has asked me to visit the area and the office before they will make a written offer. They are willing to pay for my relocation and the salary they quoted me is about $12,000 a year higher than my current one and the cost of living is cheaper there than in Charlotte, NC where I currently live. Should I visit the Shreveport area and should I move there if they give me a written offer or should I stay where I am and wait for another job offer? No other companies where I currently live or anywhere else have made me any offers.

Are they offering to pay for your visit? Do you have to commit to the job before the trip? If not, what on earth do you have to lose? You'll get to tour the potential worksite, meet them in person, they'll get to meet you and both sides can get a better sense of how good the fit might be. Take the opportunity to check out the area in terms of housing, lifestyle/vibe, costs, etc. Seems like a no brainer to me. Unless you don't want to live in Shreveport. If so, seems like you already have your answer.

They are offering to pay for the travel. I just wanted some input from some locals to see what they say about the area, if it's worth me having to take time off from work and travel to visit it and how other people feel about living there.

Honestly, people in this forum will tell you that Shreveport isn't the best area of the state. Not a lot to do and crime kind of high in some areas will be the main things they say. I'm not from there and haven't lived there so you can visit and make your mind up. However, it is about 2- 3 hours from the Dallas Metro for day and weekend trips. Bossier City across the river is considered to be nicer.

Seems like a great opportunity. Maybe take it for a couple years and if you don't like it move elsewhere. But Shreveport is nowhere near on par with Charlotte and what you may be used to. Good Luck! Louisiana gets a bad rap but its a fun, very unique cultural place(mostly in southern Louisiana) with nice people for the most part.
