I shipped using a box from Lowes.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/16-in-W-x-1...-Holes/3265367

16 x 12 x 12

Today I got an email from UPS, charging me 3.16 cents extra from my credit card because they audited and said it was 16 x 13 x 12.

Do you think Lowes messed up on the box dimension or is the UPS auditor made an error with 16 x 13 x12.

I am going to do a chargeback anyway based on principal. Not going to use them again. Post office now on.

And what principle would that be?

The auditor is an idiot principal. So tacky of UPS. I don't think Lowes messes up by an inch in thousands and thousands of moving boxes it sells in Canada and US.

I've had no issues whatever w/sending by UPS - I can't really drive much anymore and send packages to family and friends. Always delivered w/i the usual 2-day time frame I was given. (BTW, if you have AAA you get a 5% discount, at least at my local place).

I don't get what "principle" it is either.

Wild guess here - perhaps the box bulged. The dimensions can be important when figuring out how to pack the shipping containers that fit into planes. I would guess that there may be laser scanners that verify actual dimensions.

I have shipped the same items and used the same Lowe's 16 12 12 box 3 to 4 times in last few months using USPS. Always same size hockey skates that has plenty of room left. Post office never said I was over my the stated dimensions entered by me.

I searched and it looks like if you are over by 0.00001 of an inch ups will round you up. That's what the people on Reddit say.

Still doing chargeback.

Let us know how that chargeback goes. It may cost UPS $20-35 and there may be something in the terms & conditions that they will pass that on to you.

They have equipment that scans the boxes as they go through the system. Sometimes the box dimensions are a tad off or they show inner dimensions. I'd be happy it's only a small adjustment.

If that is your focus of day - have at it.
UPS has been reliable for us. Drivers bring stuff inside if I ask them. For $3 I am not laying a square egg.
