Ditto what Ellie said. You should check out Drayton Tower if you seek a "true" urban experience!

Hello! My Husband and I are moving to Savannah in June 2014. We are going to buy a house and are thinking of buying out in the Islands. I wanted to get any suggestions on where to look. Our top choices are Isle of Hope and Whitemarsh Island. We are in our early 30's and will have a baby with us. I have spent a lot of time in Savannah, but not the Islands. We want something that is close to downtown, but safe and family friendly. Also, I don't want to have to drive really far to find a good grocery store. Any advice on good neighborhoods/Island living? Thanks

Whitemarsh/Wilmington probably have better grocery store options than Isle of Hope does.

Both areas seem to be filled with families and are generally safe.

Default Relocating

Hi-

I am hoping to relocate with my partner within the next couple months. I'm interviewing there in two weeks.

I would be working in Port Wentworth, but we'd like to live on the islands or in a hip downtown neighborhood. We have two large dogs, so need a large yard and privacy. We don't have kids and we have an active lifestyle. We're planning to buy.

Any suggestions for neighborhoods that would be comfortable for a lesbian couple?

Thanks!

Kristy

PS. I do appreciate the previous post listing the positive and negative sides. Much of it I have heard from others who have lived there. For us the positives outweigh the negatives.

Default Garden City?

Hi again,

I haven't gotten any replies to my earlier question about gay friendly areas, so I'm wondering if that means there aren't any? We are looking at a great house in Garden City but not sure how conservative it might be. Anyone have any information on this area?

Thank you!

Kristy

Garden City used to be somewhat conservative, but most of the old timers have died off or moved away. The older, original part of town is not bad if you don't mind living so close to industry. Being a lesbian couple might raise a few eyebrows, but the days of surprise or horror are pretty much over. LOL Just be low key and let people get to know you gradually.

BTW, I don't think locals read this thread very often, so don't get the wrong idea. You'll be fine and welcome here in Savannah. There is a strong and socially well-integrated gay community here. Seems about as normal as anything.

Nobody cares if you're gay. Savannah's about the most gay-friendly place you could ever live. We're a tourist attraction for crying out loud!

Thank you! So many people have warned us about the "deep south" being anti-gay but we visited there and felt very comfortable. I wonder how many people have actually been there who have that opinion.

People are stupid ... especially when it comes to anything to do with the South.

To paraphrase a quote from another thread: It is easier to be gay among conservative Southerners than it is to be a conservative Southerner among gays.
