Hello All,

Do you think hurricane impact windows and sliding doors have gone up much more since 2018?
I hear that because there is more demand the prices have stayed pretty much the same or even gone down
We are buying a condo this summer, in Ft Lauderdale and in our price range, most of them have original windows , some we saw were jiggling, unstable. we would consider replacing them. as little as 3 + balcony in some of them and as many as many as 7 in some others.

Before purchasing be sure to read the condo docs regarding who is responsible for the windows, what types of replacement windows are allowed and what approval process is required. The answers could mean you can replace the windows or they could be the responsibility of the condo association and you can't touch them.

Hurricane rated windows and SGD (sliding glass doors) have increased just like anything else. Check your condo docs like someone else said & find out who's responsible.

If you live in a condominium and experience a leak from an owner above you, only then will you begin to understand the necessity for window replacement.

I'm the OP and I was surprised to see my 2018 post bumped up. Well, just as an update: I did end up replacing all the windows in 2020. The suggestions about plywood and other things were just not practical for me as I have no garage or storage space, or anyone to put them up. My new windows are great, so easy to open and the soundproofing is excellent (I'm in the flight path to SRQ). Thanks, everyone, for the help.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I live in a hurricane zone also. My house has stood strong for 35 years. Same with your condo. For this reason, I don’t worry much about hurricanes, and if I were you, I wouldn’t either.

If and when you have damage from a hurricane, your insurance will cover most of it.

I’m having a similar issue with our roof, which I hate the color of, but cannot pay $25k to replace it. We are hoping to get it replaced by insurance, due to some hail damage.

Most condo owners have already experienced an increase to their maintenance fees due to the article you posted. Prediction this year is 25 named storms and five (5) major hurricanes.
