So, it looks like we've had a "WIDE OPEN BITE for the last few weeks. The inside water temp is running 69-71F (with Point Loma showing 75F!) Go figure.

Anyway, the Yellow tail have been boiling for the last 6 weeks/2 months.

Along with almost all the other tuna species. (Oddly, albacore haven't shown up...)

Anyway, here's last 2 week's fish count. for San Diego:

9841 anglers, on everything from 1/2 day, to 3-day trips.

132 Barracuda
1109 Bluefin (to 209 lbs.)
4 Bocaccio
152 Bonito
2315 Calico
11,282 Dorado
5 Halibut
1 Leopard shark (released.)
5 lingcod
1189 Rockfish
573 Sand bass
53 Sanddab
1 Sargo
109 Skulpin
68 Sheephead
2 Skipjack
3 Striped marlin
12 Thresher shark (10 released.)
1 Triggerfish
378 Whitefish
14 White seabass (released)
879 Yellowfin
17,541 yellowtail.

So, yeah the water s warm enough to bring the game fish close enough for the casual fisherperson to limit out, if they choose to do so. Many boats came in with limits.
Even the Catalina Island Ferry got in on the action, when they had a "couple hours" to spend, on the water. They saw "foaming schools of bluefin" on their trip across to the Island. They bagged a 60 pounder bluefin. First time they've ever tried fishing off that vessel.

And then, there's the guy that landed a 55 pound white sea bass, after a 2 hour battle, on his kayak...dragged him all around the bay...LOL. (You're gonna need a bigger boat..)

The above info, was lifted from the Reader dated 25AUG2022. (So, if it's wrong, don't blame me!)

Anyway, I see there's virtually zero threads re: Deep sea ocean fishing.

Anybody got any "fish stories?" (I can't be the only one...)

72 degree water temp in the OC now too...were still getting winter fish a few weeks ago...Dodo's moved in now solidly in the fish counts. Wonder how far offshore they are and if accessible by kayak?

I used to fish the lakes and rivers around my hometown on the east coast. I loved it.

When I was in the Air Force stationed on the Gulf Coast, I loved fishing.

But fishing in the cold waters around San Diego just ain't the same.

The closest I've seen Dorado was still more than a couple of miles out. That'd be a brutal paddle especially once the wind builds. Probably a better chance off La Jolla.

Yep, showing 11,282 for the 2-week span.

The San Diego called in from their full-day trip. 103 yellowtail, limits of Dorado (70) for 35 anglers.

The Ocean Odyssey had 26 anglers: 260 yellowtail, 104 Dorado.

Excalibur had full limits of 390 yellowtail, 156 dorado for 26 anglers.

TopGun 80 on a 3.5 day run: 16 anglers...170 yellowtail, 30 dorado, 100 calico, 1 bluefin, 1 striped marlin. (Who's ever heard of "marlin and calico" on the same trip!)

Dolphin had 39 anglers:122 dorado, 1 yellowtail. This was close, as it was a half-day boat.

Liberty had limits of dorado (64), along with 4 yellowtail, 4 yellowfin, 2 bluefin, by 32 anglers.

So, yeah, it's been like that.

That's amazing. Dorado are my favorite fighting fish. Well, wahoo is number one but we don't see many.

I'm boring. I like freshwater fishing, especially for those lunker channel cats in Imperial county.
It's a personal goal this year to get out and do some fishing again after years of putting it off for lame things like jobs, housework and family events.

Yep...boats out of the OC all sold out...apparently they are well out of kayak range around 20 miles out...Paddy hopping. Want to get a local dodo (will have to put up with cattle boat crowds) without going to Baja. Great shot at it now!

I used to give some yakkers a ride out on my boat so they could paddy raid then bring em back in later that day. One day we saw an airborne grander Mako and they wanted to come back to the boat right away.
