Anyone have any idea why there's so much of them in San Diego recently?
People call them mosquito hawks but they don't eat other bugs, which is weird.

Yes they are pretty bad this year, worst I've seen in a long, long time. i had about 60 of them on my porch the other day and have killed a few in the house.
I always laugh at the people saying " i'm getting eaten alive by Mosquitoes" mean while their pet dogs and cats are sitting next them, scratching themselves to death because of fleas.

This SD UT article (from 2017) explains it pretty well:

Heavy rains this past winter have led to a bumper crop of the insect this spring — because the moisture has boosted the rate of successful breeding.

Yeah, they're all over my house for some reason. Other people are reporting a recent surge of them also.

At least they're not actual blood sucking mosquito's. Thank goodness. I won't get all fussy and scared now if I ever see on again.
You're not alone. I live six blocks from the beach but the breezes haven't kept them away. We get a couple in the house every single night, and I was calling them mosquitoes too (although they never flew around us - - which now makes sense).

There is a freeway billboard put up this week on the 8 westbound over by Lake Murray Blvd for "Fight the Bite SD." So it looks like even the County recognizes that this is a problem as of late.

I bought Cutter Backyard Spray from Home Depot after watching a Youtube video on it. I haven't seen one of those crane flies since then (two weeks so far). I too thought they were mosquitos.

What's killing me this year is the dam butterflies creating a nice mosaic of colors all over my windshield. Some are really gross.

The crane flies just make good bird food.
