Yeah Cookie I was there.
Dropped acid, flew up from CCTex,
Jimi and the boys were arriving at the airport at the same time.
My first concert was at the Joe FreeMan Coliseum.
June 1964. The Rolling Stones,
opened the show for Bobby Vinton or Bobby Vee,
don't remember which.
They did four shows on two daze.
They had just released their first single in the USA
on the day before - Not Fade Away,
I Wanna Be Your Man was on the B side.
It was the Teen Fair, and my parents had some free tickets.
Last concert I attended was at the Municipal Auditorium
a year or so ago BoB Dylan.
I heard him and the Rolling Thunder Revue
at the same house in 1975.
Needless to say, all of these were great experiences
filed away in my memory banks forever.

Wow Mud... you have just topped everybody! Jimi was certainly electric that night even without LSD. Some girls I went to school with partied with him afterwards at the Holiday Inn at 410 & 281. I would like to be able to say that I did. I can't believe you saw the Stones in 64 opening for Bobby Vinton & Bobby Vee... never would have thought those two would have connected but things were different back then. That must have been a great concert! I loved Mick Jagger but never got to see him live. Bob Dylan another great song writer and musician... I also saw him at the Majestic but years later. Do you remember "It's A Beautiful Day" and who will ever forget in-a-gatta-da-vida baby... you had to be there. Those were very exciting times. I wonder if anything like that could ever happen to another generation. It was like a spontaneous eruption of music and consciousness. I miss it but I will always have the great memories!

Cookiemeister, I remember Shawn Phillips well - that great hair. Oh, swoon. Saw him in Galveston in the 70s
Paul Revere and STEPPENWOLF (magic carpet ride)... wow! This is bringing back alot of great memories. I saw Shawn Phillips (great hair) years later at Villareal's out Bandera near Helotes (just a field out in the sticks)... he was so loaded that he could not even carry a tune or play his guitar and he kept falling out of his chair... they had to cancel the concert. He got mad because everyone was boo-ing him and he started cursing the concert goers. Everybody wanted their money back but we still managed to have a great time anyway.

Did you marry the friend or Norah Jones? Did you know that her father was Ravi Shankar? It must have been a very inspirational concert.

Cookie, I have had the good fortune of being able to hear some
of the very best - live.
OK don't get me goin, or I'll tell all the stories.
Now you mention the Holiday Inn at 410 and San Pedro.
I do believe that you meant to say the Ramada Inn.
I grew up in that neck of the woods, about a mile south,
close to Oblate.
Jimi that night played his Fender - with his tongue,
behind his back, and he also squirted lighter fluid
on it and threw a kitchen match at it while on his knees writhing
ecstatically.
Yeah, and the 2nd time I heard the Stones live was in 1969
at the basketball arena at SMU in Dallas.
The ill fated tour that terminated at the AltaMount SpeedWay.
Mick Taylor had replaced Brian Jones,
as he was murdered earlier that year.
What a show that was.
I hitchhiked up there.
Dylan at the Majestic?? I was there.
I believe it was Nov 1995.
I have the show recorded on cassette.
I really enjoyed the 5-6 numbers they did UnPlugged.
I was disappointed that he did not play the harmonica more,
but, hey, it's a live experience, different every night with Bobby.
"It's A Beautiful Day" ??
Yeah, that was at the HemisFair Arena.
I helped build that place in 1967. So what.
That night of "It's A Beautiful Day", if I remember correctly,
also included three other bigtime PsyChedelic bands.
Who was it?? huhnnhmmhh??
Maybe the Dead. Maybe Steve Miller Band.
Creedence??
Do you remember??
I heard so many at the Municipal, the Arena,
the PussyCat, the Mind's Eye, Sunken Gardens,
and of course, I do believe the very best were
in Austin, at the Vulcan Gas Company,
and then later at Armadillo World HeadQuarters.
tired of typing.

Are you referring to "Its a Beautiful Day" the group that did "Whitebird"?
If so it was Jethro Tull and several others...was there for that one. Seems to me it was like 5 different bands for that concert. One of those long concerts.
For The Iron Butterfly concert, Ron Bushy the drummer broke his drumstick on a portion of In-A-Gada-Divida and I jumped over 3 folks to get it when he threw it in the audience (a bennie for being tall I suppose)...and then I got his autograph on the back of my ticket stub that night...kept those forever and ever it seemed.
Did anyone every get to see Led Zepplin? That was my MAJOR disappointment in life, never getting to see them play.

Tappin' It...
oddly enough, my first SOLO (i.e. sans parental units) concert was SPINAL TAP at la semana in '93 at the Freeman Coliseum. it was a surreal experience as it was also one of my first public consumptions of beer, and when i stood WAY TOO CLOSE to the stage, the combination of beer, funnel cakes, greasy gorditas and the rowdy bass from the speakers i literally got sick.
i rangered on but every time i see SPINAL TAP, i want to head to the bathroom...

that's funny you mentioned the Stones being here...my mom tells me of a good friend of hers in high school (the late great Edgewood) who actually HUNG OUT with the group while they were here! she swears up and down that she saw pictures that her friend had taken with the band...appearantly the girl ran into them walking around before the show, and although they were apart of the British Invasion, they were not as big as the Beatles were here yet, so they slipped under radar. i wonder if the show with the Stones is the one that my mom used to tell me as a kid... if it is...cool...
