We are looking to make a camping trip from SLC to coastal CA with stop in the general Reno area (can also further into CA like Nevada City area as well) in mid-May. We are wondering about what kind of hikes are possible. We have, in the past, done higher altitude hikes like Mount Rose hike. Given the heavy snows, we are wondering what we might encounter in mid-May.

You most likely can hike at lake (Tahoe) level in May.

Any hike in the valleys/foothills will be great as well.

Check out the AllTrails app for your phone. It shows hiking trails etc and many times people will give trail condition updates.

I know Tahoe had many open trails along the shores up until this last blizzard.

If you are looking for a camping area, Washoe Valley has two campgrounds that are almost always accessible, Davis Creek and Washoe Lake Campground. For camping I recommend the Campendium app

This year Nevada State Parks is rolling out a reservation system. Davis Creek is a county campground and I do think they take reservations on their own website. Both of those campgrounds have hiking trails from the campground or nearby.
