Ideally I would like to take the bus into Rapid City the day before my 6am flight. So I will need to get to a hotel and then use their airport shuttle...having fun would be a bonus. Would this be doable from the Greyhound station? Any recs on hotels with free airport shuttles? Is the city bus doable to get to a hotel? I travel light. Thanks in advance!
Well, no one is jumping on this one. There are no hotels near the airport. The airport is a few miles out of town, pretty much on it's own. The bus station is about 11 miles from the airport. I'm not sure which hotels have a free airport shuttle, but you can probably use google maps and find hotels within walking distance of the bus terminal, then contact those hotels. If none do, then UBER will get you there.

Good to see Rapid is alive. It looks doable..I talked to a hotel and there are a few independent shuttles. In Gillette, there is Lyft and Uber, but not at 3 or 4 am. It looks like there is a good supply of rooms targeted at summer travelers. Is the Gateway Hotel OK? How often does treacherous weather come before Christmas?
Are you talking Gillette, WY? That's a good 3 hours or so from Rapid City, so not a easy drive/Uber to the Rapid City airport (RAP). The Gateway Hotel would be fine. It's in a nice area near the events center. No point getting to RAP more than an hour before your flight. It's a very small and easy to use regional airport.
Weather-wise, the closer you get to Christmas the more likely a weather event could crop up that could impact your travels, but generally the weather shouldn't cause any issues. Cold and windy as you walk from the bus terminal to the hotel is more likely than a major snow event closing the airport. I'd guess the airport closes once or twice a year due to the weather, so it could happen, but not likely.
