Anyone have a favorite local place to purchase raw bacon? We love Neuske’s, but it can be very expensive, especially if you have pay shipping. I’ve seen raw bacon in the meat section of stores and specialty shops, but have never tried any. I thought if I am going to spend a lot, I might as well try to keep a few dollars in a local pocket.

Harris Teeter often has the specialty bacon marked down for quick sale. Not a problem for me, bacon is eaten quicker than it can go bad at my house.

Agree with Harris Teeter as my go-to for "good bacon".

If that is not "local enough", you might also try the Nahunta Pork Center at the State Farmers Market. Never tried it there, but their name says it all, and you can find "everything pig" there.

I used to have a college roomie who's family farmed. He used to bring back salt-cured smoked pork (aka Bacon). It made for some tasty midnight snacks. I'm not sure why, but it seemed like we were always hungry in the middle of the night in college.

I am in love with Boars Head Bacon. I have to admit I am confused on the term "raw bacon", are we just talking uncooked or is there some distinction I am missing?

Yes, I just meant uncooked.

I have also made my own, cold smoking pork bellies. Not hard, but it takes some time.

You could check with Smokehouse at Steve's in Graham. Perhaps Cliff's Meat Market in Carrboro?

I've never met a slice of fried bacon that I refused to eat.
