A 9-years later note: Yes. They will fail your vehicle in Maine unless you know the "right" garage to take your car to. One should not have to know the "right" garage, but attempts to have the Maine Inspection made more realistic haven't gotten far. There has been legislative talk about doing away with it entirely, but I don't think that's a good idea either. -- It's grand that your Maine experience - at least 9 years ago - and I've been here for 17 years now - was so very chirpy.

Also. apart from your essay being superb and missing nothing, MAINE IS NOT FUN. NOT FUN. NOT FUN. Maybe on the slopes. But I don't ski.
