It was only a matter of time!
Once upon a time, Motel 6 rooms really were $6. Then only some of them were. Then none of them were. But the name still conveys the basic idea that they're inexpensive.

One problem with "99 Cents Only" was the "Only" part. Seemed like false advertising to me. If it had said "99 Cents and Up" or something to that effect it'd be different. Imagine walking into a place that says "99 Cents Only" and seeing stuff for 5.99, 7.99, 9.99, 3.50, etc. What in the hell? At least Dollar Tree is consistent. I've not ever had one single thing not ring up at $1, until they became Dollar TwentyFive Tree last year or the year before. Even then, it's still 100% consistent at $1.25. "99 Cents Only" was all over the damn place. And 5 Below makes it ambiguous with their name and logo. Is it just a weird random name? Or does it mean everything is $5 or less? Who knows!

I believe theyre shutting down in a lot of cities. My guess is the super high theft rates? I know many stores that have had to shut down is the theft ratings and the lack of ability to stop these thugs. Just my guess.

i too remember those motel 6 signs all over, as a teenager living in a city where hotels and motels were super cheap. We traveled a lot so of course we stayed in the less expensive hotels, with the 6 being one of them. But then we never even had coffee in the rooms back then either. But we did have pop machines where 10c can get you a coca cola or whatever drink. Now most places offer coffee and breakfasts.

Even Dollar Tree now has items up to $5 (soon to be increased to $7) in select stores (mainly in more affluent areas). This is known as the Dollar Tree Plus section.
