Where are some nice beaches that are the closest to Ocala on the Gulf Coast? We already went to Fort Island Beach in Crystal River a few times and that was nice and less than an hour drive. Where are some other nice beaches on the Gulf that are not that far from Ocala?

Clearwater Beach would be the nicest and closest to Ocala.

If you have time go to Fort Desoto State Park, St Pete Beach or it is well worth the time to head down to Anna Maria Island and Siesta Keys which are some of the most beautiful in Florida.

I was looking for a beach closer west of Ocala.

There are not any decent beaches WEST of Ocala even if you can find what you would call a beach.

You have to go southwest of Ocala to find a beach.

Absolutely, Sunny-Days...and for the difference in travel time, you can't beat Clearwater or St. Pete. I have done Crystal River before, but early in the summer, before the bacteria sets in. Those shallow, stagnant areas are nothing but dirty and nasty.

Facts....you can try Caladesi near Dunedin, but it's almost a wash in time to get there, due to not doing the freeway.

I've been wondering the same thing as it's too far and aggrevating to go to Pinellas Beaches. After a quick google search I see there are beaches in Cedar Key, Yankeetown, and a Horsehoe Beach in Levy County, that may be worth checking out.

Thats a manmade beach in Cedar Key, it sucks, dont waste your time!
However, Cedar Key is a wonderful place to spend the day, just not on that nasty beach!

I agree!

There is also Sunset Beach which is alittle south of Howard Park in Tarpon. It is a small cool place to picnic and relax.

OP- The beaches get much better the further south you go.

It would be well worth the extra time to drive to them.

West of Ocala Ft. Island is the only decent beach. Mind you I rather go to Hunter Springs then there. If your looking for a Good Gulf beach your only real choice is Clearwater and St. Pete area. Heck People In Crystal River even make the drive if they want a good Beach. There is Hernando Beach in ...Weeki Wachi..I think..Maybe its in Spring hill..Hell its somewhere down there. But I wasn't too Impressed. Clearwater is the place where people go for Gulf Coast Beach.
