Good food in general is fine, but extra points if the restaurant has a great walleye dish!

I'm about to set off on a trip to Canada, and will wend my way through my neighbor to the north on the way. My exact route though ND isn't etched in stone. I'm hungry for some really good fresh walleye! And anything else yummy.

You won't (shouldn't) be seeing US walleye served in a US restaurant. The fish would have to be Canadian. The US walleye fishery is recreational only.

Hmmmm. Who knew?

"Although they are found in Canadian and US waters, the only commercially available Walleye for restaurants are from the US Great Lakes region, Minnesota, and Canada due to over-fishing concerns in the rest of the US...Restaurant Walleye Availability: Fresh Walleye are most available in the spring and fall, peaking around May and October. In the summer months, they move to deeper, cooler waters and are hard to source. Since commercially sourced Walleye are only obtainable from the Great Lakes region, Minnesota and Canada, in the winter months, fresh Walleye are only commercially available via ice fishing and therefore are virtually unavailable until spring. Frozen fillets are generally available year-round." https://www.chefs-resources.com/

"The Red Lake Band of Chippewa in northwest Minnesota provides walleye to a variety of restaurants in the state. Tribal members catch all of the band’s walleyes by hand from Lower Red Lake. People can order walleye fillets directly from Red Lake Fishery, or try one of the restaurants that serve them....Save for the Red Lake Nation’s limited distribution, commercial walleye fishing is illegal in Minnesota," https://www.exploreminnesota.com/art...leye-minnesota

But I can catch 5 Walleye with a license in North Dakota, and the walleye population is high right now in Devil's Lake. Then I could cook my own or find a guide or restaurant to prepare it or me. Boy, I really need to learn how to fish.

That's too bad. When I was in Pierre, SD, the walleye was one of the best fish I every tasted. We were told that restaurants only served frozen fish.

I got walleye sandwich at Culbertson's in April in Grand Forks. Also a good walleye and chips at Speedway 805 Grill in Grand Forks.
