I'm a relatively new Nebraskan. I've now purchased my second new vehicle from a name-brand new vehicle dealer. And for the second time, the finance person miscalculated the sales tax. For the life of me I can't understand why this should even be a thing. Two different dealers. Folks at the assesors's office say they do it wrong a LOT. Different city/county rates, blah blah. But seriously... how hard can it be to look at a chart and put in the right rate?

If they miscalculated the tax in your favor, it's one more thing to be thankful for and if they miscalculated the tax NOT in your favor I'm just guessing that somehow it ended up in their pocket.

Contact them first and let them know you're aware of the issue, see what they have to say about it.

But, most importantly, do not think twice about contacting a lawyer so you can cover yourself. The dealership will try and buy time so it is in their favor, but this is 100% financial corruption so they can pocket more money.

Assessor says it's a matter of the dealer using the wrong tax for the city. Some fraction of a percent. And both times it was caught and corrected by the assessor at registration time. Since the dealer doesn't handle the registration (like they do in other states), it's not a money maker for them. I expect if THEY were handling the registration it might be more important to them to get the figures right.
