I was really surprised by this. But it's a good cautionary tale about online vitriol.

Jar Jar Binks Actor Reflects on Backlash to Phantom Menace: 'My Career Began and Ended' with Star Wars

The actor who played Jar Jar Binks is proud of his 'Star Wars' legacy
In the presence of Best’s self-assured demeanor, it’s even more shocking to learn that back in 1999 the vitriol fans flung at Jar Jar, and in turn at him, ravaged his mental health. But he revisited these memories a few weeks before the movie’s return to theaters Friday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its release.

Ahmed Best Finally Gets to Celebrate Jar Jar in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Fans of the prequel series have outshone in numbers cynical trilogy fans that bullied the actor.

I have never loved Jar Jar, though I find the reaction against him unwarranted. But none of that was Ahmed Best's fault. The only person to blame for Jar Jar is George George.

Hmmm, a bunch of articles. I wonder if he has a book coming out, is engaged in a new project, or has kicked his agent in the butt. "Mesome no have good work! Needum publicity!"

The playing up of the being bullied had me rolling my eyes. Actors = Egos. I'm thinking that he is probably a nice guy, but that "bullied" bit is SO minor compared to what many have experienced in "the machine." To claim that the reaction to his animated character portrayal somehow caused him an existential crisis? "To besome, or not to besome, thatum is the questionum."

I certainly agree about "unwarranted." Amazing how worked up some fans can get.

Bad movie all around. Poor characters excepting Obi Wan Kenobi, The actor actually played the part well even if the rest of the movie and plot was stinkola. Liam Neeson was lame, wooden and stiff. Lucas's closet racism was apparent.

No Darth Vader either.. which made me realize after seeing Phantom, that the entire prequel trilogy was gonna suck.
And I know they snuck Vader in at the very end of the third prequel, but it wasn't enough. No Vader, doomed the prequel trilogy in my opinion. Vader was too critical to the franchise's appeal.

I'd interpreted Jar Jar Binks as a Shakespearean fool archetype. Unfortunately I think his role was more shallow than that. He should have been given some compensating qualities, so he's more than he appears. People have even been trying to invent those for him, such as with the Darth Binks role.

Far too generous. Think of Jar Jar as a Looney Tunes or Scooby Doo castoff who wears out his welcome inside of five minutes, if that.

Binks was reportedly based by Lucas on "Goofy" the Disney dog. Big mistake. He could have been based on Deputy Droop-along.
