I strongly doubt there is any relationship between the two.

In full disclosure, I had heard about the band but today was my first time actually listening to the music.

Based on what Acajack has provided it seems more like Bob Dylan in terms of providing a message with clever and no holds-barred lyrics with solid musical talent. Lightfoot was a great story teller but very different in his message, at least during his hey days.

Yeah, I was trying to think of contemporary artists in the anglophone world who combine societal messaging with significant mainstream success like Les Cowboys Fringants do, but I can't think of any.

That and the passports the musicians carry might be the only thing in common.

I doubt Les Cowboys were inspired by the Guess Who in any way for this song.

The Tragically Hip seems like the closest equivalent to Les Cowboys, right down to the impact of the singer's death from cancer. They were less about social commentary though (but not fully without).

I definitely thought of them but did not think that example would be relevant for Americans.
