I am considering a move to Missoula and was wondering how grey the winters actually are. I've heard that Missoula can have 6+ months of grey, gloomy wintery weather and am curious how "gloomy" it actually is and for how long. I love Missoula and the outdoor amenities so any input would be much appreciated!

I don't think it's a big deal. You can have crummy weather for a few days or a week straight but then it gets sunny again.

According to the NWS, historically Missoula gets 65 sunny days and 94 partly sunny days in Missoula IN A 12 MONTH YEAR.

Thanks for the input! I am just trying to better understand how bad that can actually be. I mean are you getting 6 months of pretty much grey skies with cold weather? I'm thinking like seattle style weather with snow and cold vs just rain and cold. Don't get me wrong, I'm not afraid of cold weather and like winter sports a lot but constant grayness for months on end might wear on me a bit.

Any additional input from someone who has lived there through a few winters would be appreciated.

Nope, it's not like that you can have a lot of sunny days in the winter. Cold, but sunny. Most places in the Rockies are like that. A system can roll in, dump some snow, then it leaves at the sun comes out and the snow melts off without accumulating all winter.

What about driving conditions? Can you manage without having to get a wheel drive? or all wheel drive?

It would be best to have a 4x4 or AWD, but many people get along just fine with a FWD car. I don't think I'd do a 2wd pickup...

I love Missoula but would never live there in winter. It is subject to inversions & is gray gray gray in winter.
Many other places in MT are sunny in winter, stormy then sun comes out--that is not Missoula, or not Polson.

How about rear wheel drive?

Maybe a well-balanced sedan, like a 5-series BMW with traction control, but a RWD pickup with no weight in the back? Nope.
