There's your qualified observation, not some gut feelings about park trails or bordering neighborhoods due to hearing about scattered news reports, and unfortunately, Panhandlers and vagrants are a feature of most every city you visit now. Work for or contribute to organizations which help the truly homeless and needy, but be careful not to enable the habits of most of the ocassional panhandlers which might approach you in the streets. They are not really a big threat to your safety.

How are the busses into downtown along Poplar? I'm considering relocating to Memphis and moving to accommodations right off Overton Park and I do not drive. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Public transportation is not the best in Memphis. If you do not drive, look for housing as close to work as possible.

Take the 50 on Poplar which has a 30 minute headway during the week (except late night), and 60 minutes weekends.

Or if you're closer to Overton Park Avenue, you could take the 53, but it's got 60 minute headways, and 120 minutes on Sundays and late nights.
