Hi,

My daughter plans to attend a program at University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis.
Is the area safe?

What will be the best/safe neighborhoods for her to rent?
How is public transportation in Memphis? Is it possible to commute w/o car or better to have a car?

Thanks!

Public transportation in Memphis is very basic. Most people opt to have a car.

There is a lot of new development in the Medical District, which should make things safer. Right now, I think Downtown still has the edge. Another possibility is Midtown; young people like Overton Square.

Better to have a car in Memphis. The busses are not that great, and to have any kind of social/typical lifestyle you'd want access to a vehicle.

Harbor Town on Mud Island is probably the safest spot in downtown Memphis. This would be my top recommendation (behind Cordelia's Market grocery store). The South Main/South Front Street area is also a very popular area and somewhat safe for downtown, keeping in mind it's a true downtown location.

In Midtown if you can find a place in Central Gardens residential neighborhood or perhaps right next to Rhodes College these are fairly upscale neighborhoods that are about as safe as it gets in the Midtown area, although not truly safe.

Besides perhaps Harbor Town, nowhere in the downtown or Midtown areas of Memphis is going to be truly safe. If that's a concern, it's better to find a place in one of the suburban towns where police forces are far more responsive and crime is rare. Germantown is very nice, probably 25 minutes from downtown. Also Southaven in Mississippi is a bustling suburban area that's very safe and a straight shot to downtown probably 20 minutes. A few minutes south of Southaven is the town of Hernando with an adorable town square, probably a good 25 minutes to downtown. This is a growing, safe suburban area.

East Memphis along Walnut Grove Rd. (roughly between Perkins and I-240) is also a great area and fairly close in (probably 20 minutes to downtown), if renting a small house is an option. This is a safe, established area.

You shouldn't under-estimate the safety issue. Lots of people, including lots of young people, live downtown and Midtown but inside Memphis city limits, crime is a huge issue that most people encounter, so it depends on how safe you want as to whether you choose city or suburbs.

Mehhh. That seems to be a tad overblown. I lived in Evergreen and Cooper-Young and they're both great, fun parts of the city. Do you want to be walking at 3 am along Poplar or Central? No, but Memphis is a real city so just have some streets smarts. No need to live in Mississippi or Collierville if your central nexus is going to be UTHSC.

Memphis is a dangerous city. There's no getting around that. The two well-publicized recent incidents just brought it into focus.

https://wreg.com/news/local/memphis-...angerous-city/

Last year there were 346 homicides, a record.

Carjackings and car break-ins have become particularly bad recently.

A lot of this is ”credited” to juveniles, who rarely get punished. In fact, the new DA and juvenile court judge basically want to stop punishing them.

https://wreg.com/news/local/shelby-c...ile-crime/amp/

I would not rent anything that did not have secure parking.

On google maps, you can see campus police directly across the street from UT and a parking garage behind that. Many people go there for medical school etc, so they undoubtedly have ways to protect students and employees. And lots of people live downtown these days as well as Midtown. But being smart is absolutely vital and not being in denial about what can happen.

Memphis was just on national news a couple of weeks ago for Liza Fletcher and the same week someone (a gang member of some kind) was driving around midtown shooting innocent people. So picking a safe area and being really smart about the city is a real thing. Students at Rhodes were murdered a couple of years ago and even on Mud Island a lady was murdered after being followed home from shopping.

The good news is that the moment you cross into Germantown/Collierville or into DeSoto County, Mississippi violent crime drops to near zero.

Yes there are A Couple of Secure Parking Garages in the Health Science Center Area. Honestly I dont hear about much Crime happening in that Area. Your Daughter should probably stick to that area. There is A Trolly System she could use. Although it basically just sticks to the spine of Downtown and Midtown Anything beyond that requires Car. Or Since She would basically be in the middle of town she could rely on Ubers for quick trips. But of course there are risks associated with most everything

Stick with Midtown, Ubers from Midtown to Health Science Center (also midtown) Should be less than $10 unless theres a surge. If She Moves to Germantown or Collierville and tries to Uber to Midtown everyday those prices start approaching $25 and up especially during surge pricing. If She has to Uber to Midtown and back to Germantown each day $25 x 2 so $50 round trip to school and back home everyday

Midtown Like Downtown is experiencing an Apartment Building Boom. So Getting a apartment in Midtown could be done with a little effort. Downtown Apartments dont last long on the market and Most New Apartments down there have Waiting Lists. By the Time A New Apartment Tower/Complex opens Downtown it's Already Sold Out/Leased Out and they'll ask you would you like to add your name to the waiting list. So if Downtown is where you're looking Act Fast to secure a place. As Vacancies in the New Construction are Rare. There Are Vacancies in some of the Older Properties sometime

Downtown is the Center of Activity and more In Demand. Unfortunatey though Where People Party Crime Follows. If She Chooses Downtown WATCH HER CAR if she gets one. Some of these New Downtown Apartments Are Big Fat Targets for CAR Thieves. Namely Break Ins but a few car jackings every now and then. Unlike Midtown by the Health Science Center (which theives seem to pass on by) where I hardly hear of car break ins (not to say it doesn't happen) I Have Heard Countless Stories of Peoples CArs being Broken into in the The SouthMain Area and sometimes they Hit up Harbortown in Mud Island. They Strike like 3am for example and People Wake up around 8 or 9 am and see about 15 16 17 car windows have been busted. GOOGLE IT its many stories about this happening

Ha, Not To Scare You, Its Not Like This Happens Everyday But if She Chooses Downtown. Choose A Spot With A Gate and Preferably with A Parking Garage with Card Access.

If She Gets A Car, Recommend Areas like Chicksaw Gardens by the Uof M area. Safe Leafy Neighborhood and Only about A 15 minute Drive to Health Science

Wow You Really Know Memphis if You Know about that Cordelia's Market Grocery in Harbortown. Also Shady Grove, that's part of the Area "roughly between Perkins and I-240 Expressway." Now That Area is NIIICE safe and leafy too but full of Mansions, you may have to have some $$$ to stay out there. The Areas closer to Perkins Are more affordable tho. This Area (roughly between Perkins and I-240) I Would Recomend too. Its Nice Safe Leafy and Like a 15-20 minute near straight shot to Midtown

I Wouldn't Recommend Southaven Or Hernando to her, Thats Too Much Driving especially Hernando. Thats Way out in the Boondocks. Southaven and Hernando are too far away and growing too fast. They Are Nice Safe Cities but its Malls out there Wal Marts, Retail Shops, Apartments, Strip Malls, Every Restaurant you can think off, Doctor Offices, Best Buy, Landers Center Arena, close to the Airport, Tanger Outlets, A Hospital, Constantly building New Houses, Movie Theaters etc. What Does All that Sound like? TRAFFIC. Yeah its 20 minutes From Southaven to Downtown on a Sunday Morning. But Rush Hour? More Like 30 minutes. And Hernando more like 35-40 minutes during Rush Hour. Especially if there's road construction or a car wreck blocking traffic A Student might be late for class
