Why isn’t former Red Sox player George Scott’s son not all over this thread? It’s the biggest crime to hit New Bedford since the Big Dan’s gang rape on the pool table that spawned the Jodie Foster movie. Murder-suicide of his 8 year old son. Probably offed his girlfriend.

Acushnet Ave in New Bedford. Is there a more rundown or dirtier business district in New England? Absolutely filthy.

I'm sure there are plenty everywhere. But you know what? I have lived off the Ave for 8 years now. I married and moved here from the Newport, RI area where I grew up. I drive back and forth every week. It took a lot of getting used to, but I actually enjoy it. It's diverse, vibrant, and there's always something going on...and this is true to the entire area...lovely, beautiful area, and interesting, unique city. No it's not for everyone, but fear of trash is your fear, it's so relative. Trash is flux, always coming and going. It's not such a big deal. People in suburbs are so ruled by fears that are very overblown compared to the shame they bestow on city residents. My neighbors even leave their front door open 24/7.

I can't think of anywhere in New England.

...and just because one poster enjoys the filth, that doesn't make it any less filthy!

Oh I don't enjoy it. I used to be like you before I stepped up and moved here. Any densely populated city will have it and I'm sure you'd be the first one doing it, littering.

I don't think it's the worst in a 15 mile radius, let alone New England. The Flint Village (Pleasant St. in particular) in Fall River is a good deal more hopeless feeling in my opinion - more vacant storefronts, lower concentration of business, more vacant lots where buildings once stood, etc. Acushnet Ave. have bakeries, markets, barber shops, salons, shops, restaurants, bars, etc. that regular people use on a daily basis. Nobody is going to mistake it for Newbury Street, but it's at least functional for the population it serves (and beyond). There are "business districts" that don't even do that anymore (take a ride down Brightman St. in Fall River sometime - formerly a small business district, now completely dead).

Fall River was the first to come to mind, but I kind of view those places as shells of business districts. I'm sure there are quite a few other places in New England that fall in that category. But actual business districts, I can't think of any.
