I am interested in learning if you have to pay an entrance fee to use Otter Creek Park for hiking or walking on trails? It is about 25 to 30 miles SW of Louisville off Dixie Highway based upon what I see on a map.

I have upper respiratory issues and the air in Louisville is giving me a lot of trouble. I have noted when I get 20 to 30 miles outside of the city I can breathe much better and my energy level is improved. This was also true when I lived in Indianapolis. Cincinnati was not as bad but bad enough.

With that in mind, finding a place outside of the city where I can get out to walk once in a while and won't have to deal with the air quality here is something that I need to find. Thanks.

I don’t think they charge anything, at least they didn’t last time I was there a couple of years ago. If they do, however, you can drive another 8-10 miles south on 31W (Dixie Hwy) to Freeman Lake in E’town. There are nice natural walking paths. It also hooks up with Veterans Park (across from the lake on Ring Road) which has sidewalks, if you need that. Both are free.

Also, walking along the river in Brandenburg (west of Otter Creek) is nice.

Thank you for the suggestion. Will look into it.

If the gate is manned, it’s $3 to enter per car. That’s the price of one gallon of gas. Bern

This far less than $15 for Bernheim forest.

Bernheim forest now charges? I remember when that and when Otter Creek were free.

Otter Creek Park is now ran by the KY Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. They do charge $3 to enter, and it is only open Thursday - Sunday.

Interesting. Considering it is located in Meade County, not Jefferson (Louisville), this makes much more sense. I never did get the rationale for Jefferson County Parks leasing it.

The federal govt approached Louisville in the 1940’s and the city said yes.
