I'm originally from MI and we found our way here to retire after stints in IA, S. CA, N. CA and 32 yrs in SW FL. We've been here 1.5 yrs. Love it. As to your specific questions, I would say opportunities will exist in your field, but you would need to do some research as to pay and other aspects. I don't know what course(s) of study you are looking for, but that should be easy to research via contact with NMSU.

When we fly out of El Paso we plan on an hour to get to the airport, park, etc. etc. In Sarasota County FL, air fares were so high we would drive to Tampa, so this area is much easier for us as far as air travel. You will find the winters much milder than the midwest. Almost laughable really. Coming from SW FL we think the summers here are great. Low humidity and virtually no weather extremes (hurricanes, tornadoes, ice/snow storms).

Good luck with your search and I would give Las Cruces a strong look and make a visit. Have fun!

It felt isolated when we lived there. LC has Mexican restaurants and a few Walmarts. Everything else is a 45 min drive to El Paso. It also feels isolated because the people are angry and rude. The only people we ever connected with were other transplants. We ended up moving to Tucson after a few years of LC. Tucson seems like Paris compared to LC. And don’t think NMSU makes Cruces a college/university town because it isn’t. It’s definitely not a college town, it’s a town with a college in it.
