How bad is the racism in NE Florida now? (Jacksonville: crime, house)

I think it is directly proportional to demographics. It Depends where you live. I have found that typically it is limited to the lower income low tooth to tattoo ratio whites that are the most racist (Male & Female). Not all but a vast majority and are usually right wing. Everyone that is not white is taking their jobs you see. (at least that is what they think). The fact they really do not want to work at those jobs is somewhat irrelevant.

Luckily we live in an area where there are none, so we all live happily in racial harmony. I have many friends of different races, religions, nationalities and political affiliation, we all seem to get on fine. We all complain about the LTTTR's which is not racism as such, but we should not really do, it is not their fault (Although the Tattoos are self inflicted), Tats are expensive, I would rather spend the money on my teeth... . By the way racism is not only based on color, it can be towards Jews, Polish, Puerto Ricans, Chinese, Japanese, Native Indian etc. It takes all sorts to make a world, we all should just accept it and move on.

I'm sorry for your experience but most of the racism that exists would be much less overt than calling someone the n-word. It's mostly of the segregation type. People not visiting certain neighborhoods under the pretense of "high crime" but also because that's where all the black people live.

You'd be more likely experience someone clutching their purse or walking a little quicker with an eye towards escaping than being called the n-word. In my experience, the racism is more about fear than confrontation. They don't want to engage with you. They just want nothing to do with you.

I'm confused the OP is Asian? but they called you the N word? Just asking as I generally feel whites think highly of Asians. If your black forget it. Jacksonville is actually south Georgia. Lots of racial tensions with the black community which is pretty much corralled into really bad places. Crime, largely in the black areas. So my thought is if you are black, Jacksonville is a bad place to live, as is Georgia, Alabama. Mississippi. Not to say you can't find a safe place or acceptance in a well considered community. Overall though ignorance is alive and well in JAX

While the job is great and my co-workers would be awesome, I have the added responsibility of two, very young children. While I'm sure that we would be fine in the urban areas of Duval and St Johns county and our experience would be much like SW Florida and SE Florida where we've been, I'm very concerned that this would be an isolating and constrained life experience. Meaning, we would not be able to participate in activities outside of the urban metro due to what we experienced over a decade ago still being prevalent. Especially given current anti-immigrant and anti-minority sentiment in heavily "Red" areas of the country.

We're boaters, campers, golfers, beach nuts and all around connoisseurs of enjoying life outside of the house. We've been in SW FLorida for 3 years and really indulged and while there is certainly tension, the people here in Naples have the smart sense and class to keep it under wraps. Plus, the lingua franca here is money....if you have it, then you're fine with most of the people here. Its a bit frustrating too, but at least we feel very safe if not fully accepted.

So, to the point of the matter. How has NE Florida changed since 2006? Is there greater acceptance of other skin tones in non-urban areas? Has it regressed in any way given the current climate?

Also...how's the sailing?

I'm sorry, but I have to respond to something specific in this post. There is no "anti immigrant, anti-minority" mindset in most parts of the "Red" areas of Jacksonville or the country overall. Maybe small pockets, but it's not the defining characteristic. There is an anti "illegal" immigrant mindset, which is directed at the drug cartels, MS 13 gang members and so forth, not the law abiding immigrants that come here and become productive members and assimilate into our society.


Some of my best friends hail from place like Mexico, Sri Lanka, Iraq and Albania, and they are also against illegal immigration, having spent time and money to become legal US citizens.


The premise that there is this vast wave of anti-immigrant mentality is false.

Thank you for posting. We are a Caucasian and south Asian (of Muslim descent) family and looking to relocate to Saint Johns. We live in Massachusetts and have two young children who are pretty much surrounded by families like ours. I’m concerned about them being targets of bullying or “tokens” at their schools. Husband is a doctor and they pay doctors two to three times as much in Jax and we are beach bums so we are strongly considering a move. Are my concerns valid?

I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. I'm a minority but never experienced anything like what happened to the OP. I think that perception of Jacksonville is made up, and exaggerated, to keep people away from area since they want it all for themselves (it's a place where someone can earn twice as much for half the cost of living).

Yes I believe you have a great thing going. My family there is the same (white wife, south Asian husband, two kids) and they love it but they also really want us to move there
