Recently I was visiting an art museum, and in a gallery of 19th-century European art I observed a woman in hijab looking at a painting of a nude. She seemed to turn away hastily when she noticed I saw her. Walking through the gallery I realized that there were several paintings and sculptures that featured nude or semi-nude figures, and wondered if there is any proscription in Islam (religious or cultural) against looking at artistic representations such as these.

Probably in every religious based morality it’s not an appreciable or a likable act, to see nudity. (Except for perhaps Hinduism when we analyze the khajuraho Temple).

However, there are much, much more bigger sins that a Muslim has to worry about. This could be stealing, deceiving others, hurting others, cheating and deceiving others, doing wrong and injustice to others, dishonesty at your places of work and business, being rude and disobedient to one’s parents etc.

If that female was looking at a nude painting then obviously she was not doing a likable act under the Islamic guidance but that’s her personal matter between her n her God. And God forgives. Her act didn’t involve another person whom she was doing wrong to. So I wouldn’t sweat my blood over it. All human beings make mistakes and no one is an angel regardless of his/her religious association.

Matter of fact, your staring at her like that was just as tasteless..

I was not staring at her. And the art wasn't "tasteless." This was a well-known and prestigious museum.

The same museum had plenty of early Hindu sculpture, including lingams.
