Hi, 4bryants...
Idaho Falls actually has a pretty good school system here with some depth in it. Besides the public schools, which do vary in quality somewhat according to their location, there are quite a few private schools here; a Montessori school, several private grade schools, and at least one private high school.

A big part of why our schools are better than in other parts of the state has a lot to do with the INL's long presence in this town. With so many folks moving here for nuclear careers, they wanted their kids to receive good educations, so there's always been more and better funding for schools here than in some other parts of the state.

While I haven't kept up with things much, there were differences between our two local districts, Dist. 91 and Dist. 93.

93 was typically slower to get school bonds passed than 91 in the past, but nowadays, this seems to have reversed. And while both districts are growing, 93, the county district, is now growing faster than 91, the city district.

I can't say if the growth implies better teachers, though. Both districts are trying hard to stay on the digital edge as much as they can.

I think it would be beneficial for you to contact both and ask questions. I would also talk to the Chamber of Commerce here for info as well.

You won't have any problems here as an African-American family, I'm sure, other than being a minority. We have more folks like you than we had before, but we also have some other minorities here too, Indians, Pakistanis, Asians, and lots of others.

We all get along pretty well. There are very few neighborhoods that have the hard separations of race, culture, and economics that there are in other cities and states. I.F. is still just small enough any family can get to know the neighbors and develop friendships that cross those lines.

One thing you will soon learn living here is the Mormons often make very good neighbors. Since there are so many here, they don't tend to have missionaries coming to your door here either.

I guess they figure if you're interested in the church, there's always one a few blocks away, no matter where you live here.

As far as meeting new people who aren't particularly "faith-centric" there is a Unitarian Universalist church in Idaho Falls that welcomes people of all beliefs, or no beliefs. I have found them to be some of the most open-minded and accepting people I have had the pleasure to spend time with. I think they also display the ONLY "Black Lives Matter" sign in the entire town.

Idaho Falls Progressives is also a good group of non-conservative, open-minded folks who do a lot of good work in the community.
