The tree sizes found in the region were amazing. David McCullough's, The Pioneers, which focuses on the first settlements in the Northwest Territory (what became States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota) focuses on the first settlements in the Ohio River valley and gives a great description of the first efforts in SE Ohio and the efforts to conform the landscape and make livable. Great read that focuses on few family's from New England in this part of Appalachia and overall impact on US history based on their views (Education/Slavery/ Political representation etc) and Ohio in particular.
Historical adaptability I guess. Our ancestors certainly made the most of where they wound up living.
