I saw one in the gun store last week and checked it out. It looked a bit bulky but that's a bit deceiving. I liked the feel of it. It has an 18-inch barrel, semi-automatic with a max capacity of 17 2 3/4" shells. You only have to rack it once, shoot off the first 2, and then you have access to any of the 5 rounds in the three tubes.
I am seriously considering one for a range toy. They are even legal in California believe it or not. After all didn't President Biden tell us all that a shotgun is all you need?
Hmm, I wonder why it’s not dominating 3-Gun competition?
Perhaps because it is a shotgun designed for home defense in tight quarters. It is 28" inches long overall with an 18 inch barrel. I don't know much about 3 gun competitions but from what I've seen I would more likely use my Benelli for that type of shooting. It probably isn't a good choice for duck hunting, Skeet shooting, or deer hunting either. It's all about the right tool for a job.

Is there a fundamental difference between a shotgun designed for defense, and a shotgun used for action shooting games?

I don't know; I know next to nothing about the 3 gun competition. In my opinion, the TS-12 appears to be a great home defense shotgun option. 17 rounds total if you put one on the lifter and one in the chamber. You can reload on the fly using either the left or right tubes. I would love to hear any negative points you may have.

I dont get the function of having to fire off two before being able to choose the alternate magazine tubes.

It holds 15 rounds in the tubes (5). You don't HAVE to have one on the lifter and one in the chamber (the two you would fire before it starts feeding from the tubes). It just allows you to load it up to a full 17 rounds. If you want you can just start feeding it through the tubes and have 15 total rounds.
I’ve only shot one bull pup style 12ga and I don’t remember what it was, but I found it awkward for me. But that was only two shots shooting backyard clays- so I’m not going say anything more.
