In the live trap, a "critter gitter" that works for the state and will come to your house for problems like this, put a couple live traps on my roof and put a big glob of peanut butter with bird seed mixed in.

When I was little, there was an older man who was a family friend who would put some corn in a cage trap on a tree in his yard. Most squirrels caught went to the freezer. Neighbor reported him to the game warden who came by and made him take it down while he watched. Warden left, trap was back on the tree in 10 minutes and 2 more squirrels in the freezer that afternoon.

One thing I haven't seen here is Epsom Salts.
I am not sure how well it works on squirrel, but it does wonders for groundhogs.
They don't like the smell, so they go elsewhere.

Only a couple dollars, might be worth a try.

(I know, basically, how a regular piston drive works.)

Tremendously BAD advice. Don't poison, ever. That poison goes up the food chain, killing subsequent animals. Friendlies, too. Like your dog. Then, next year, they come back with a vengeance, because you've killed they natural predators with the poison the previous season.

OP~ Get an owl box. Put it up and wait for an owl to makes it's home, there. Shouldn't take long. Unless bee's move in. The good thing about owls? They work at night, silently. You may wonder how many gophers/squirrels an owl dispatches per year...how about 3000 per bird? The great thing? No poisons to screw up the whole area, and owls can keep on killing, year after year after year. After year.

Well, it wasn't sideways when I posted it!

I own precision airguns. This one will do the trick. It is low power (you don't need high power) and very, very quiet and it will dispatch a squirrel humanely. It is exceptionally accurate - a tack driver.
