I'm sorry if sarcasm clouded my message. Toyota Motor Corporation is investing $4.7 billion and creating 5000 good paying middle class jobs precisely BECAUSE of "chasing megasites". And in my opinion, the the PTI Megasite ultimately holds similar potential. My enmity is directed toward those who drool over "tech" instead. Put away your telesopes, this isn't Boston or New York. Nor even Raleigh or Charlotte. It doesn't have to be either/or, but for our immediate area, manufacturing and transportation/distribution/logistics are where the gold is for the vast majority of the population. Let's build, let's move, let's do. Let's pursue our own identity. And don't kid yourselves, the rest of North Carolina is taking notice. And not without a touch of envy.
Plus $225 million is the state investment which I'd be more concerned about (the $4.7 billion investment overall from Toyota isnt a concern since its their money). Depending how it's (the $225 million) structured it could be a good deal but either way, 5000 good paying jobs is a big win.
Which is consistent with what was suggested/hinted at when the battery plant was announced... but it IS on a larger scale (I think the original suggestions for the auto plant was another 1700 or so jobs.

Looks like the Triad has finally done what it has been trying to accomplish for 30 years and it will be electric vehicles at that.

When Toyota and Boom were announced at close to the same time, a lot of the talk was that Toyota was a beneficial project but that Boom would be transformational if it can get off the ground. I'm starting to think that Toyota has a chance to be transformational in its own right. They're already adding hundreds of jobs on the battery side in addition to what was previously announced but also it appears to be only a matter of when as to the announcement of the automobile plant as well. Thousands of well-paying jobs in a growing industry (electric vehicles) will only help in attracting other jobs/business as well (especially those linked with electric vehicles).
If Boom actually can get off the ground too...... (though I'm not holding my breath on that one)
I think Toyota has the potential to be for Guilford-Randolph what BMW is to Upstate South Carolina, with ancillary business and industry poppin up in the vicinity to capitalize on this industrial powerhouse.
As mentioned in the Beltway thread, someone on AARoads forum emailed AASHTO about their recent meeting results, which was posted. Looks like Future I-685 is a done deal. AASHTO approved NCDOT's request during it's spring meeting earlier this year.
