We will be moving near them when we retire next month. I don't want to be so close that they always drop in unannounced but not so far that they never come over. Or that it takes us too long to go back and forth from the many sporting events the grand kids have.
Yes, we did exactly this just about 3 years ago and it has worked out beautifully. We are about 30 minutes from the grands, and would have probably liked to be a bit closer but the house we ended up buying we couldn't turn down, it was perfect for us. In any case, the 30 minute distance has not been prohibitive - we attend all the sporting events (or did before COVID shut them down), we pick up the kids for overnights, celebrate birthdays and all holidays together unless they are out of town visiting the other grandparents. We have had the kids for days at a time (I think 5 is our record so far lol), our grandson was 8 when we moved down and our granddaughter was 3 and we have developed such a close relationship with them that we are like a second set of parents - except we're more fun.
About 6 miles or 15 minutes by car. Since March we have hardly seen them at all. They are teenagers now but we used to babysit occasionally, occasionally keep them overnight, visit each others' homes on holidays, birthdays, etc.
Wife and I, empty-nesters, have been planning to move to TX to be closer to our son and his family for over a year now, but can't seem to cut loose this too-big house full of her stuff that she carries an emotional attachment to. I have to keep working, at 72, to keep up the payment. Retirement Plan A did not work out, so on to Plan B.
