I am looking into moving to Urbana, MD from New York. I have a 10 year old son who is African American and I am worried about him being discriminated against because of the color of his skin. Currently he is in a gifted program in NY. I am not worried about him being able to do the work at all, I am only worried about the social and emotional side of being in a school with very few students that look like him.

Any insights or experiences with this town or school would be helpful.

Urbana is a good school district, I can't guarantee that they won't have any problems but I don't believe it is common in the area.

You shouldn't have any problems in most of the Urbana feeder area. And Urbana High School (I know he isn't there yet) has some of the most advanced programs in the county.

So he is not of Boer descent......

You could always move to a predominantly African American area so he would have many people that look like him?

There should be no problem. We are south Asian family, our son goes to Oakdale high. No issues what so ever.
