Not much of a fast food fan, but I prefer In-N-Out over Shake Shack if that's all I have to choose from. Shake Shack is grossly over priced for what you get. The couple of times I ate at Shake Shack, my digestive system was in turmoil for several days.
In-n-Out & Five Guys better. I finally got a Shake Shack in my immediate area & tried it once. Not impressed & pricey. I'll see about giving them 1 more chance & try something different on the menu.
In-n-Out is not great. It is just great at its price point. Same price as McDonalds but much fresher hamburger and better milk shake. I hate their shoestring fries.
I finally had Culvers and it beat In-n-Out to me.
I would still like to try a Cook Out and a Whataburger.

Five Guys is expansive. I don't see it as competition for In-n-Out or Shake Shack.
West Coaster, and we didn't get Shake Shacks out here until a couple of years ago. I've had both and while I like Shake Shack for a change once in a while, I'll still take In n Out.
When I lived in Orange County, CA I lived close enough to an In-n-Out to smell the grilled onions if I had my patio door open and the wind was blowing my way. They had lines of cars at the drive-up window that any of the other fast food joints nearby could only dream of. Sure, I went there maybe once per month or two, when there was a time when I didn't feel like cooking something, and the crowds at In-n-Out weren't too bad. I just walked over and ordered at the counter, and there was seldom a line.
One thing I like about In-n-Out besides decent burgers for the price, is they pay employees above average wages (for fast food places) and offer decent benefits. As a result, they have less turnover than most fast food places, and most that work there have good manners with customers. They also have a high standard for keeping the place clean. That helps, cause I don't like going to trashy looking eating places.
I also lived in Alabama for a few years in the late 1990s. Lots of Shake Shacks there, along with Zaxby's, Sonic, Hardee's, Chick-fil-A and a few others. Shake Shack was a bit "meh", nothing to rave about. The only reason I went more than once was to tag along with some people from work.

We have only been to In & Out a few times when in California, but have Shake Shack here. We consider Shake Shack to be the best fast food burger place, with Habit Burger 2nd, 5 Guys 3rd, Carl's Jr. 4th, then In & Out 5th.
Shake Shack burgers are much better than In-n-Out burgers.
In-n-Out burgers are so plain, bland, and boring. They taste like a factory-made, mushy mess in your mouth. Whereas Shake Shack tastes fresh, and the fixings are flavorful & feel crisp and bright to the palate.
I had heard so much about In-n-Out before going to California, and couldn’t wait to try them. What a disappointment!
To me, there’s no contest between Shake Shack and In-n-Out burgers.
I can’t justify shake shack pricing. Good food but it was pushing $30 for a burger, fries, and a milkshake. At that price it had better be gourmet, and it was not gourmet. It basically guarantees I’ll never be back. I’ll take five guys, Culver’s, in n out, or Smashburger any day of the week over shake shack.
I’m that rare person who likes the in n out fries. The burger is fantastic, shakes are decent. Secret menu gives a lot of flexibility I feel like most places would throw some shade on you for.
