What would you say are some good paintings done/finished in the 1940s? Or maybe ones made earlier (say, the 1920s or 30s) that became very popular in the 1940s.
Posters and book illustrations of the time are also OK.
I'd say I like more realistic-looking paintings that capture the feel of their eras like Edward Hopper's Nighthawks or the
We Can Do It! aka Rosie The Riveter poster.
That said sometimes I'd like something very abstract like Dali's "The Persistence of Memory" or Picasso's
"Guernica" (both 30s, I know). Especially if it includes stylized animals, plants or human-made objects like clocks, cars or stylized human lips and eyes. It's the eye/lamp and especially the horse that make Guernica great for me and The Persistence of Memory is self-explanatory.
