I saw an old guy wearing an Hawaiian t-shirt with a giant American flag embellished on both sides. All I could do was giggle - it seemed really tacky. I just returned from an international trip and I did not see anyone in Europe, Africa, or Asia wearing flag embellished clothes. If I saw someone in France or Japan wearing a a shirt or dress with a with a tricolore (France) or rising sun (Japan) I would probably have the same reaction. It brings too much attention to oneself and could even be dangerous depending on one's feelings towards a country but I don't think flags belong on clothes. What do you all think? I do not like to advertise my nationality on my shirt or pants.
What drives me nuts is when the flag wearers suggest that they are more of a patriot because they wear the flag, and obviously I don't love my country because I don't.
No, I'm just not tacky, and I don't need to convince the world that I'm patriotic via my clothing.
Just returned from 2 months overseas trip - I have no problem telling people where I come from - most ascertain that the minute I open my mouth - but no need to wear it on my clothing. LOL - live in a "retirement" community part time and I'd say 30% of the residences have an American flag outside their house - I suppose to remind them about where they live - I saw no flags hanging from residences in UK, France, Mauritius, or Sri Lanka - maybe people wear their countries flags during sports matches - I don't know.

Did you ask about this while you were in those countries?

I don't have any clothing with an American flag on it, unless you count a soccer jersey with the national team crest which pulls elements of the flag. And that is reserved for when I'm watching national team games in person. Wearing patriotic clothing is just not my thing at all.
That being said, even if I don't find it stylish, I don't have a personal issue with it if someone else wants to do it. I personally don't understand the views of disrespect or the flag code around this issue. I am thankful that I was lucky to be born in this country. But I don't view the man-made symbol representing where I was randomly born to be sacred to the point of getting upset with someone for wearing it on their clothing. Besides, the people who do choose to wear it on their clothing are ones who are usually choosing to display their patriotism and then other people who are supposedly patriotic get upset because other people aren't being patriotic in the right, respectful way.
I just stay clear of all of that in real life. Not a bridge I cross in personal conversation because it's lose-lose.
Hawaiian shirts are not, so I can see why this would look stupid..
