Turn prices are typically >$90/day. I'll see if I can post a request.

$3,000 won't even buy a piece of cr*& in Alaska these days.

Depending on the odometer, if a Subie of that vintage is otherwise in good running order, chances are it's already had a failed head gasket replaced. They don't tend to blow them more than once. A specific question to ask the seller. When buying used, you'd want to have a mechanic check it over anyway.

I have a 2005 Outback that I keep in Oregon with 60 on it; I wonder when its head gasket will blow up. Don't really use it and have been meaning to sell it.

Statistically, the Subaru head gasket failures owners & DIY mechanics talk about occurred most frequently on earlier generation engines (gen 1 and 2: 95-2004). Your 2005 has a different engine. No guarantee a 2005's won't fail, but it is a lot less common. Lots of discussion about HG failures and preventive maintenance measures you can take on subaruoutback.org and subaruforester.org.

Go with the rental because they will sell you reasonably priced insurance to go with it

I think after checking around it's the best deal and the safest way to go.
