I rented a UHaul when I had to fly to Anchorage a few weeks ago. You could try that. And UAF is offering free shuttle service to tourist spots this summer.

Who are these people willing to pay absolutely insane rental car prices?

There are a lot of people out there who have more money than good sense.

There are people who have dreamed about and planned a trip to AK for years. It is an expensive destination. They aren't willing to let the price of a rental car derail their plans.

We get a corporate discount through my husband's work. We booked our car in December for our vacation next week..its $560 for a week for a minivan and they called yesterday to verify the pickup and reservation so fingers crossed that means we have a car.

You could get decent priced airfare right now but not really any spur of the moment rentals for houses or cars and no tours

Default Pretty simple, actually.

Rent an adventure motorcycle from Alaskan Adventure Riders (They're even on "Karen Ave!")

Well, you want an adventure, or not?

Rent a moto and ride the Dalton to the Arctic Circle. I guarantee that'll be an adventure....

Local friend has a trip planned to Denali next month and was informed recently that their family's rent a car reservation had been cancelled, reason not given. She was a bit frantic about finding a replacement, asked around and found something off Turo.

It's everywhere. We live in Wisconsin and had some friends coming. Our local airport had 0 cars available. We go to Alaska every year to visit our daughter. This is the 1st year we will not rent a car. We usually pay around $45 day and the going rate was well over $200. We can manage without a car.

You are correct. There are great airline travel discounts at the moment, and incredibly cheap by September. But even in September renting a car is quite expensive.

We go touring every summer up in the states. No way this year with the car rental situation. So we bought a nice small used car in Mexico and are touring here now.

Wonderful historic cities with $20 decent hotel rooms and fantastic food $7 each for great dinner and $4 full breakfast.

Very few foreign tourists. No lines for museums.

Check out driving a car into Mexico also as an alternative. Also in Costa Rica great time for cheaper hotels and plenty of cars available.

Its tough people cant travel normally. May have to think outside of the box this year.
