They were too frugal to spend a lot of hard-earned money on expensive airfare and would be shocked how expensive everything is today.
Oh I have done plenty of road trips and we get away within USA at least twice a year. I just dont care much for foreign countries and flying being the biggest turn off. Then comes the price which lately has been astronomical .

$2500 to fly from NYC to LA and back from SF for 4 people. Inflation is real.
