One of the "immo" sites was mentioned as being the main transaction hub. Probably only in German. I'll look into longer term housing later if I want to proceed with more than a modest length visit.
At this point, I'd be most interested in hearing about favorite specific sites / experiences in or near Leipzig or Freiburg or Konstanz (and perhaps Munich). Or anything that really surprised you in those spots or accommodation experiences there in the moderate to less expensive range.
Freiburg, Konstanz and Munich are among the most expensive places in Germany to find a place to rent. They are all either student meccas (Freiburg, Munich), high-paying job meccas (Munich) or attractive vacation areas (Konstanz). Konstanz might have some more moderate rental deals in the off-season.
Like I mentioned before, just a few kilometers from the center of Leipzig you can find a variety of moderate to less expensive vacation apartments using Google Maps. Most get enough foreign visitors or short term residents that speak English that you will likely be able to communicate in English to secure the rental. If you want a specific example, here's one where I stayed for 5 months. This is not spam, just an example of what you can find. Website is in German.
Use their contact form and you can write in English any question, ask for a monthly cost quote (varies by apartment) and whatever you want to know. The owners speak perfect English. There is an excellent German language school (Paroli) two blocks away. You will always get better rates with a monthly stay. This place is convenient to everything in Leipzig.
Thanks for the tip about the site and reminder to try using Google maps.
Rosenheim was a potential way to save over Munich and Garmisch and still be nearby. I may look for outlying area options to Leipzig, Freiburg and Konstanz as well. Whether the savings are worth the time travel will depend on the specifics. I might pay city centre prices occasionally if using the city at night but would probably prefer not to pay premium all the time when accessing countryside or using city only by day or taking breaks.
The trip to Europe has not been scheduled or taken yet. I am still considering different destination priorities and sorting out the right itinerary and timing. More likely 2025.
Anybody have brief, off the cuff comments about places in Slovenia? Grenoble or Toulouse
France? Torino or Trieste Italy? Girona or Valencia Spain?
