Last night, as I sat at the dining-room table catching up on some work on my laptop, my first-grade-teacher wife (who was on the nearby sofa) was relating a story to me about one of her students, who had for several days been so excited about going to see 'the golfers wrestling'. Finally, yesterday she understood was he was really saying-
At which point, I broke in and said "Oh, he was saying 'Gophers'".
She look at me, mystified, and asked me how I knew. First, I'll point out that we live close to the Twin Cities, at the University of Minnesota, whose mascot - including that of the wrestling team - is the Golden Gophers.
But that wasn't how I knew. I said nothing to my wife. I just silently googled this, turned up the volume, and clicked PLAY:
