Desert turtles?

If you have desert tortoises (not sure about the box turtles), please be sure to allow them access to dig a burrow for winter time. They need to have somewhere to hibernate.

I don't know the specifics for smaller turtles, but we had some that dug into a dirt "wall" every winter. We always worried about it as it was smaller, but it would come out in the spring and be very hungry.

We also "fostered" a really large (40 year old) desert tortoise and made a big pile of dirt in a corner of the yard, which he burrowed into. Otherwise, in his old house, he would dig under a patio slab and winter down below the patio.

If they don't get deep enough into the dirt, they won't be insulated from the winter cold and could die.

We always put out lettuce and other veggie/fruits once in a while as an alternative to the yard plants and grass. Remember that the bite marks in the large nopals are usually from desert tortoises, so if you use nopales, give one to your tortoise!

Love to adopt 5 desert box turtles

Hello,
I pray that you will answer me and have a satisfactory solution for me.
I live in Northeast El Paso and have occupied my home for 45 years. When my children were young they began to collect the adorable desert tortoises that have lived in our back yard for 40 years now. The majority of them have been here that long, but I have a few that somehow found their way to my yard later. The latest one was born here. He is 3 years old this summer. We adore these little guys and they have given us so much pleasure over the years. Now, I am 85 and my husband is almost 80 and we will be moving to living quarters where there is NO possibility to take our babies with us. It is weighing very heavy on our hearts because we love them so much and they know exactly who we are. They come running to us as soon as they see us, OR, if we are not around when they come out, they will stomp their little feet and wait for us on the patio until we announce ourselves.
Is there anyway you can help me place these little angels where they will be loved and safe. This is a horrendous decision for us and we are in desperate need of help.
Please let me know what options I might have for re homing my precious little pets. This is a time of life that I have been so dreading.
