Conclusion: There is strong evidence supporting the clinical efficacy and safety of berberine in the treatment of DM, especially as an adjunctive therapy. In the future, this may be used to guide targeted clinical use of berberine and the development of medications seeking to treat patients with T2DM and dyslipidemia.
I take Berberine after reading the studies comparing Berberine and Metformin. Berberine appears to be superior product in many ways even though I think Metformin works very well for many.
my endocrinologist who is head of endocrinology and diabetic treatment at one of long islands top tier hospitals wants me not on metformin or glimpride anymore .
research has been showing that the new GLP-1 shots are far superior to protecting against stroke and all the organs diabetes tends to attack .
there is not only bad side effects from the two drugs but it’s easy to go to low with glimpride if meal timing is poor .
so now i am on trulicity…..there are some side effects but no where near the issues metformin and glimpride seem to cause .
plus more and more research he said is showing that higher a1c numbers are more acceptable from the new shots which are providing so much protection to the organs

I've been on Metformin for a few years now and it's kept me at 6.3, after being up over 7. My only side effect was eliminated by taking 1/2 with breakfast and 1/2 with dinner rather than all at once.

they are looking at the long term side effects on the body from metformin today and they seem to be an issue , not the immediate side effects from taking it on you.
There a very low risk of developing a condition called lactic acidosis. This is when lactic acid builds up in the blood. When it occurs due to metformin, it is known as metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA)Trusted Source. Lactic acidosis can be life-threatening.
Certain people taking metformin may also have a risk of kidney damage. A 2018 studyTrusted Source suggests that metformin may reduce kidney function in people with both moderate chronic kidney disease and T2DM.
but the main issue is it offers none of the protection to the organs the newer drugs do and that is the reason endocrinologists who follow the latest research are pulling patients off the old school drugs because lowest a1c numbers are not as good as the protection from the GLP1 type drugs
I've been taking Berberine and Bitter Melon with R-Lipoic Acid daily as I am pre-diabetic. I had blood work done recently and my A1C has come down a tad. With low carb/higher protein diet I will keep taking it.
one thing i do want to mention is once you are on medicare all these drugs cost big bucks .
these new drugs are tier 5 or tier 6 and can cost 1000 to 1200 a month .
a typical medicare part d drug plan or advantage plan works like this .
usually there is a 500-550 deductible yearly on tier 5 and 6 drugs .
then the plan picks up and you may pay 11 bucks or so .
but that is only until they pay out about 5k in total drugs ..that is about 4-5 months .
then you fall in the gap as it called .
you pay 25% of the cost which is 250 a month for trulicity until years end or you hit about 8k out of pocket when the plan picks up again until years end , then it repeats all over.
so trulicity costs me about 2700 a year out of pocket
My husband tried taking berberine but it gave him diarrhea. Since I have IBS-D, after he told me that, I didn't even try it. As another poster said---and I second it---if it works for you without any problems, I say "good"!
I'm not adverse to taking herbal supplements but I only do so after I thoroughly researched them plus use a drug interaction site to make sure that they don't clash with any of my prescription meds.
