YouTube has older video of the big 90s transition of when WJBK went from CBS to Fox in 1995. Good lord Huel Perkins had been there forever. They had a hotline number starting with area code 810. I moved to the area about nine years ago so this predates me a bit. This really surprised me. I had always thought Oakland County had split from 313. I always identify 810 with Flint mostly. Random I know lol.

Actually you aren’t wrong Oakland county was 313 until the 810 was created in 1993. It was split off into 248 in 1997. It was only an 810 area code for about 4 years. Pretty much the whole thumb down to the Ohio border was 313 until 1993.

Until 93 there were 4 Michigan area codes:

906 for the UP
616 for the western 3rd
517 for the middle 3rd and the north half of the thumb (basically north of 69)
313 for the eastern 3rd. I don't know how far into Jackson county 313 went. Chelsea was 313 and Jackson was 517.

906 didn't exist until 61!

That's interesting!

Interesting. Michigan and Ohio had a lot of area codes while most other states only had one or two. I wonder why?

They had double the populations of most other states and required more.

Still surprising that California had the same number of area codes as Iowa (3). Or that Georgia (now more populous than Michigan) only had one.

You're looking at the original area code map. Area codes were first established in 1947. In 1950 Michigan had nearly 6.4 million people, Georgia had 3.4 million, California had 10.5 million. Given how limited telephone usage was in 1950, combined with lower populations it should be that surprising.

In the 1940 census, Florida and it's single area code had just 1.9 million residents! Each area code can hold 9.99 million numbers (I think really 8.99 million, I don't think numbers can actually start with zero)

Brighton area was 313 forever.

On 8/10/93 we changed to 810.

Clever.

So, there we were, in the middle of everything.

I lived in the 810 area.

3 miles west of my home was 517.

5 miles east was 248.

And 313 was way east.

For a little while, calling outside our LATA was 1st tier long distance rates.
