To keep it simply , I’m retiring after 25yrs of Police work , I have 4 children ( 9-17 ) , I will be making 107,000 per year . I’m looking for insight on schools districts and the future budgets ( sustainability) , crime / drug issues ? housing taxes ?, employment ?

To put it bluntly the state of NJ is crumbling in massive debt , I pay 10,000 per year in house taxes for a 2200 sq ft house on a 100x100 lot . 1500.00 per car in vehicle insurance , the school is system is literally broke with 30 million in shortfalls , poor test scoring , 25:1 teacher ratio . Crime is on the rise and we have a serious drug epidemic in our state, mostly heroin and pills. The cost of living on my pension is not sustainable in NJ so we are seriously considering moving but would appreciate anyone’s input and opinions on any of the factors I have mentioned.
Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry about crime or the schools in Ankeny. Great schools for your kids definitely.

If you are getting a $107,000 pension plus looking for work for you and for your (spouse?). You should be fine. A 2,200 square foot house, not including the basement would run around $350,000 to $500,000 for the Ankeny area (newer build -- 2010-current).

Actually any of the Des Moines metro/suburban districts would serve you well, happy hunting.

Why Iowa? It's ridiculously cold.

Why not? It's affordable.

There's quite a few reasons why the Iowa forum has extremely low traffic; ignorance and trolling are definitely towards the top.

Tulsa is way more affordable than Iowa. The weather is also better.

Tulsa does not have subjectively better weather, it is still extreme in other categories. Des Moines ranks objectively much better in most metrics compared to Tulsa.

Iowa does get cold in the winter, that's a given. But it's also less prone to ice storms and while tornadic activity is far from unheard of, it's not on the same level as the Southern Plains.

OK is slightly cheaper overall than IA, but it doesn't take away from the fact that IA is still one of the most affordable states there is.

cold is relative.

If you're coming from New Jersey I wouldn't call Iowa especially not Southern Iowa cold
