I recommend you drive through Fort Garland (visit the Museum and Cultural Center for a perspective on Kit Carson), head south on 159/522 to Taos, and stay overnight in Taos (find a nice restaurant and visit the Kit Carson Home and Museum for an opposing perspective, sometimes given by one of his descendants if you are lucky). Then on to Santa Fe in the morning.

Yes.
It is not a divided highway for the most part.

This route sounds like a beautiful drive:

Almost any route that avoids the traffic and construction holdup around Colorado Springs would be preferable to the main highway.

We always advise people not to drive in the mountains at night. Wildlife and free range cattle will wander onto the highway, and they are impossible to see in the dark.

Dangerous in adverse conditions — yes, especially the ground blizzards you can encounter between FairPlay and Buena Vista.

I have seen Elk herds on the roads at night in northern New Mexico in October. You do not want to hit one.

OP was abducted somewhere in Rural NM and will seen on the Gai TV channel when they come back....
